The Best Industry in the United States
My child is in college. She is starting to ask about industries and careers. Olivia has made me think further about what construction contracting has to offer her. I have concluded it is the best career a young person could choose. You may not believe it, but the facts will show our business is unmatched. It offers participants long term tangible benefits. However, many people will argue that point. Let me show you the many virtues our industry has. You be the judge. The Industry is Not Going Away... Read More

Go Get Your Goals in ‘08
It’s a new year and 2008 is going to bring you what you want, I promise. How can I make that promise? Because I promise you are more likely to stick to your resolutions WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS. I just spent seven days in life-planning bootcamp that I put on for a group of my friends and I have all my goals clearly laid out. A complete first draft of my next book by June. Getting my blood pressure down to 130/70 without meds. Going to... Read More

You Can't Do It All Yourself!
During my first seven years starting and building my construction company, I tried to do it all myself. I did all the estimates and presented the bids; I signed all the contracts, subcontracts and change orders; I made the big field decisions; I purchased all materials and equipment; I awarded subcontracts; I went to all the job meetings; I supervised concrete slab pours; and made every personn...... Do you work on vacation?
The holiday season is upon us. For some of us it means days off here and thereto visit friends and family, catch up on last-minute holiday shopping, or get some prep work done for a huge culinary undertaking. When you’re off the job for holidays or vacations, are you like one-third of the working population who stillstaysconnected with the office via phone or email even though their cubicle is bare? Or have you ever sacrificed your precious time off to come into the office because someone needs you? More... Read More

References of Our Annual Boot Camp
Matt, I wanted to write to express my appreciation for the Business Management Boot Camp seminar you put on through the Southeastern Pennsylvania Associated Builders and Contractors from 4-23-07 through 4-27-07 My personal experience in our industry has been one of coming up through the ranks of a carpentry company, from Apprentice, to Carpenter, to Superintendent and now into management. This is not an uncommon path for many managers in the construction business; however the shift in paradigms from the field to a management position was a struggle for... Read More

Disconnected
So the unthinkable happened. I was in a cab last Thursday talking on my BlackBerry and hoping to catch my flight home to Boston. As I approached the airport, I got off the phone and prepared to make the usual dash to catch my flight. "Ahhhh", I remember feeling. I made it just as they shut the doors. As I settled into my seat, I heard the safety announcement informing all passengers to turn off their electrical devices. I reached into my briefcase to turn off my BlackBerry and... Read More

TED: Finding Balance
I spent four days at the annual TED Convention (March 7-10) in Monterey, CA. It was an amazing collection of people, including President Bill Clinton, venture capitalist John Doerr, producer J.J. Abrams, singer Paul Simon, Nobel prize winner Murray Gell-Mann, NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and a whole slew of politicians, executives, investors, and celebrities. One presentation I wanted to share with you was called "HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE?" I don't necessarily prescribe to all of the speaker's philosophies, but the points he made were interesting... Read More

Clearing Mental Clutter
OK it’s spring and it’s time to do some spring cleaning. I’m not talking about the ‘stuff’ that’s accumulated over winter, though cleaning that out gives a boost to your mental energy as well. I’m talking about clearing out all the thought processes, ways of being, 'programs' you've accumulated over the years that are buggy and no longer serve you. My colleague used to say “Time to update your personal operating system”. Many laugh at that concept but in truth we have to do that on a regular basis.... Read More

Favorite Book 2007
The Toyota Way is my favorite book for 2007. It had so many good ideas that I could not keep up and ended up reading it again and even buying the Field Book to go along with it.
Download Elegant Solutions from Change This which provides some highlights of the Toyota Production System. Too many ideas that are applicable to contractors to even count!
