“Greenwashing” May Run Into Trouble With F.T.C.

The Federal Trade Commission began hearings yesterday on green marketing.  While Tuesday’s session was aimed at carbon offsets, the series will cover a number of topics and aspects of green advertising.

Environmental advertising is regulated by the F.T.C.’s Green Guides, which were last updated in 1998.  Such common terms as ‘renewable energy’ and ’sustainability’ are not defined or clearly explained in the regulations.

Many environmentalists hope that the F.T.C. will decide to update the Green Guides to effectively cut down on “greenwashing:”  companies making questionable or false environmental claims in order to lure in unknowing consumers.  Complaints of this type of activity have skyrocketed in recent years.  For more information on the F.T.C.’s hearing and greenwashing, check out this New York Times article.
